Heron (F. Ardeidae)
Commonwealth, 21st May 2011

The remains of this bird were scattered alongside the KTM railway tracks which run along Commonwealth. I cannot confirm that the skull, legs, and the other bones all belonged to the same individual, although their close proximity is highly suggestive.

There are a number of smaller heron species that are commonly recorded in Singapore, and the skull could have belonged to one of these species:

Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis)

Striated heron (Butorides striatus)

Chinese pond heron (Ardeola bacchus)

Yellow bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis)

Cinnamon bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus)

Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
