ROAD KILLS! Cautious driving Brunei! Cautious Driving!

Very unsightly Brunei! This is very disturbing and disappointing news to share.

Road kills are one of the main causes of wildlife deaths in addition to habitat loss, poaching etc. It may be unavoidable if the animal had ran across unexpectedly, but with a little caution while driving, we could have spared the animal.

This unsightly picture of the otter was taken by one of our members along the Sungai Liang highway today. Don’t speed, drive safe. All of us can make a difference.

Meryl Theng has identified this roadkill as a rare Hairy-nosed Otter (Lutra sumatrana), based on the white throat patch and the absence of a lighter underside, which are characteristic of the other Otter species present in Borneo – the Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) and Asian Small-clawed Otter (Aonyx cinereus).
